+ WOMBAT grade 2 questions and commentary

[Bel~, Lexicon] Lexicon Bel~ - Oct 2, 2006 8:54 pm
Edited by Kip Carter Oct 3, 2006 1:12 am

Steve, Lisa and I had a lot of fun sharing our answers (and guesses ) on the W.O.M.B.A.T. test questions.

(You can read the full text of the questions and our commentary here.)

We would love to hear your commentary too!

One of our Hosts, S.E. Jones, was kind enough to produce all of the questions as the first message to this new thread; however I have blended her message into this opening post so that the questions would always be available quickly. Thanks and I will delete that copied first message after I make this edit. - Kip 1:12 am Tue 3 Oct 06

(Sorry -- it was too long...)

16. The following beliefs are all widely held in the wizarding world, but only ONE is actually TRUE. (According to the latest research from the Institute of Muggle Studies) Which is it? a. Muggle-born witches/wizards are more likely to produce Squib children than those who have one or more wizarding parents. b. Muggle-born witches/wizards usually have a witch or wizard ancestor somewhere in their family tree, though s/he may be generations back. c. Muggle-born witches/wizards are generally less prone to certain magical illnesses than those who have one or more wizarding parent. d. Muggle-born witches/wizards are generally slower to show signs of magic in childhood than those who have one or more wizarding parent. e. Muggle-born witches/wizards have great natural rhythm. Total guess, I chose b. I thought this was another totally bogus question we couldn't possibly answer.

17. Which of the following statements is FALSE? (According to the latest research from the Institute of Muggle Studies) a. It is possible for a Muggle to produce elementary magic if they have access to a wand and a book of spells b. It is possible for a Muggle to inadvertently stumble upon magically protected areas such as Diagon Alley and St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries c. It is possible for a Muggle to see and correctly identify magical creatures d. It is possible for a Muggle to see and yet deny the existence of magical creatures, even without magical intervention e. It is possible for a Muggle to believe in impossibilities I chose a., because I thought JKR answered that question in an interview or on her site. Also thought all others were true just based on my general knowledge.

18. Muggles are: a. Ignorant b. In danger c. Inferior to wizards d. Insensitive to their surroundings e. Interesting f. Irritating facts of life I chose e. but in retrospect I should've chosen d. because of the "muggles never notice nuffink" thing...

So see why I think the scoring is random? I totally guessed on so many things, and I couldn't possibly have been that lucky -- I wonder if the scores are just given randomly as long as you at least answer all of the questions? (Some people experimented and didn't answer many and got bad scores.) Also seems like I don't have much consistency with previous "O" people, although I didn't chart it exactly...

Particularly since some of us guessed completely different and got an O as well.

Phelim Mcintyre - Oct 8, 2006 4:07 am (#77 of 83)

Have just read my results and got Exceeds Expectations. I have read the answers of those who got O's and my answers in many cases were identical. So how does the marking work - please tell us JKR.

[E., Marie]Marie E. - Oct 8, 2006 6:27 am (#78 of 83)

Just got my results and it's an E! I only got an A last time, so I'm very pleased. Later today I'll post again with my responses to the questions.

I out-smartarsed the Lexicon staff, I got an O.

Those scores seem to imply that you have to hit the right combination of answers, rather than the right answers, to hit an O.

Mrs. D. - Oct 8, 2006 9:59 am (#80 of 83)

Well I am a bit annoyed as my answers were often only one or two off from those who received an outstanding and the same as those who received E's but I am one of the few whose exam earned merely an A. After getting an E last time, it was a bit of a downer but not too bad as I really had to rush through it. I felt okay until everyone else posted their higher marks. Now I am wondering if how long it took had anything to do with it. Though, I suppose not as some merely marked all A's, B's, or C's and such. Hmmm...

The only question for which no one else has yet listed similar reasoning for giving one of the answers I picked is #16, where the question was T/F about wizard's beliefs. I chose (c.) Muggle-born witches/wizards are generally less prone to certain magical illnesses than those who have one or more wizarding parent, because I figured that between the death of her mother from multiple sclerosis and the pregnancies of her own, JKR has researched genetic pre-disposition to disease. The MS Society of Scotland is one of the books in the links library on her website. That might be over-thinking it; but that is why I chose that answer.

[Pomfrey, Madame]Madame Pomfrey - Oct 8, 2006 2:03 pm (#82 of 83)

I think the correct answer or the answer Jo is seeking is worth 5 points, second most correct 4 points and on. Part one was worth a possible 35 out of 100 points.Part two 25 out of 100,part three 15 out of 100 and part four 25 out of 100.

[Jones, Ellen]Ellen Jones - Oct 9, 2006 12:49 pm (#83 of 83)

I got an E, and I guessed on many of the answers. I'm a reader and enjoyer of the books, not a scholar. I do tend to be a lucky test taker.
